How to play Minesweeper Online: Classic Logic Puzzle in Browser (No Download, Free HTML5)
- 01Click any square to expose what lies underneath: a blank space, a clue number, or a bomb.
- 02The clue number indicates exactly how many bombs exist in the eight surrounding adjacent cells.
- 03Use right-click or long-press to mark suspected bomb locations with a flag.
- 04Clear all non-bomb squares to win the game.

Minesweeper is a classic grid-based deduction puzzle where players reveal squares and use numerical adjacency clues to identify and flag hidden mines. Created as an open-source web application by Mu-An Chiou and released under the MIT licence, this version runs entirely in the browser using semantic HTML DOM elements and emoji rendering without tracking scripts or downloads.
Mathematical Board Dimensions & Probability Matrix
Grid difficulty is governed by the ratio of hidden mines to total interactive cells:
| Preset Mode | Grid Dimensions | Total Cells | Mine Count | Mine Density |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 9 x 9 | 81 | 10 | 12.3% |
| Intermediate | 16 x 16 | 256 | 40 | 15.6% |
| Expert | 30 x 16 | 480 | 99 | 20.6% |
| Custom Maximum | 50 x 50 | 2500 | Variable | Up to 35.0% |
Core Deterministic Deduction Patterns
Expert Minesweeper play avoids guesswork by recognizing canonical adjacency patterns:
1. The 1-2-1 Flat Wall Pattern
When the numbers 1, 2, and 1 appear along a straight border of unrevealed squares:
- The squares directly touching the outer
1s are guaranteed safe. - The two squares touching the central
2are guaranteed bombs.
2. The 1-2-2-1 Double Bomb Pattern
When encountering 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 along an unrevealed edge:
- The two center squares adjacent to the
2s contain the bombs. - The outer cells flanking the pattern are completely safe to clear.
3. Corner Adjacency
A 1 located in a concave corner touches exactly three unrevealed tiles. If two are known safe from overlapping clues, the third tile is deterministically a bomb.
Technical Architecture & Local Privacy
Unlike commercial ad portals, this game operates entirely within local browser memory:
- Local State Persistence: The board state is stored in
localStorage, permitting page refreshes without forfeiting active runs. - Upstream Hygiene: Vendored directly from the Mu-An Chiou emoji-minesweeper repository with all remote analytics, CDN dependencies, and service-worker telemetry permanently removed.
Minesweeper Online: Classic Logic Puzzle in Browser (No Download, Free HTML5) FAQ
- Is the first click in this Minesweeper guaranteed to be safe?
- In this pure open-source random implementation, mine generation occurs before the first click, creating a genuine unassisted probability environment.
- Can I change board dimensions and bomb density?
- Yes, the in-game settings modal allows custom grid widths, heights, and total mine counts.
