Powkiddy RGB30 ArkOS Setup Guide: Pixel-Perfect 1:1 Display and PICO-8 Configuration

To achieve pixel-perfect integer scaling on the Powkiddy RGB30, flash ArkOS and configure RetroArch with an explicit custom aspect ratio to exploit its unique 720x720 1:1 square display. The 1:1 aspect ratio renders PICO-8 (128x128) at an exact 5x integer scale and Game Boy (160x144) at a crisp 4x scale without horizontal or vertical blur.

Step-by-Step ArkOS Flashing & Partition Layout

  1. Download the community-maintained RK3566 build from the official ArkOS Wiki.
  2. Flash the raw .img file to a 16GB or 32GB MicroSD card (Slot 1 / TF-OS) using BalenaEtcher or Raspberry Pi Imager.
  3. Insert a second high-capacity MicroSD card formatted as FAT32 or exFAT into Slot 2 (TF-ROM).
  4. Power on the RGB30. ArkOS automatically resizes the root partition on the first boot (~3 minutes).
  5. Open Options -> Advanced -> Switch to SD2 for ROMs to generate system folder hierarchies on your secondary card.

PICO-8 Native Setup with Wi-Fi Splore

ArkOS includes a built-in launcher for both the open-source Fake-08 core and official Lexaloffle PICO-8 binaries:

  1. Obtain pico-8_0.2.6b_raspi.zip from your Lexaloffle PICO-8 account.
  2. Extract pico8_dyn and pico8.dat.
  3. Copy both files via SFTP or local card reader into:
    /roms/bios/pico-8/
  4. In the EmulationStation main menu, press Start -> Emulator Settings -> PICO-8 and change the default emulator from RETROARCH (FAKE-08) to STANDALONE (OFFICIAL PICO-8).
  5. Connect to your 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi network. Launching PICO-8 opens the official Splore portal, downloading cartridges directly to /roms/pico-8/.

Configuring RetroArch Custom Video Aspect Ratio

To prevent bilinear filtering blur on Game Boy and SNES:

  1. Launch any Game Boy title (e.g., using the Gambatte core).
  2. Press Select + X to open the RetroArch Quick Menu.
  3. Navigate to Settings -> Video -> Scaling:

Hardware Troubleshooting: Recalibrating the RK3566 Battery Fuel Gauge

A documented hardware quirk of the Powkiddy RGB30 power management IC (PMIC) is that battery percentage can jump erratically between 80% and 15%:

  • Symptom: The unit shuts down unexpectedly while displaying 40% battery, or charges to 100% in 15 minutes.
  • The Hardware Fix: Power down the unit. Unscrew the 4 rear hex screws, gently disconnect the white 2-pin JST battery connector, and hold the front power button down for 20 seconds to drain motherboard residual capacitors. Reconnect the battery firmly and assemble the rear casing.
  • The Software Cycle: Charge the device overnight using a standard 5V/2A USB-A to USB-C charger. Avoid high-voltage USB-PD fast chargers, as the RGB30 lacks active Power Delivery negotiation hardware.
